Featuring Blenheim apricot jam and tart cherry grapefruit jam

San Francisco Chronicle July 19, 2014

We Love Jam's Spiced Molasses BBQ Sauce:

This latest offering from the San Francisco preserves company offers deep notes of molasses and bourbon in what tastes like the culinary love child of a traditional bbq sauce and a spiced gingerbread cookie (in a good way, of course). CoolHunting.com We Love Jam: Blenheim Apricot Jam, BBQ Sauce and Biscotti

by Ami Kealoha, 11 June 2008

Like having the best of the best Farmer's Market delivered to your door, California-based We Love Jam hand makes some of the most tantalizing jams, sauces and other treats we've ever tasted and sells them online. Using produce sourced from obscure varieties of fruits and refining recipes to perfection, their products are bursting with flavor and boast addictive qualities that make them disappear quickly.

Their pitch-perfect BBQ sauce, hitting the ideal vinegary sweet balance with a touch of heat, has fast become our favorite summer condiment. As recommended by the makers, the sauce is as delicious on grilled meats as it is on sandwiches, fries and any other excuse you can find to get it into your mouth. A 16-ounce mason jar is $10 from their online store.

Similarly habit-forming, We Love Jam recently introduced a citrus, dark chocolate and nut biscotti that's exceptional. With a subtle dose of hand-candied citrus, a liberal sprinkling of raw Mission almonds and hazelnuts with touches of Belgian chocolate, the combination goes well with coffee and teas. A much softer, more snackable texture than other biscotti, they're tasty on their own as well. The treats are made in small batches and a box of nine (packaged in biodegradable cellophane) is $10.

We Love Jam made their name with their exceptional Blenheim Apricot Jam. The makers started with the apricot variety back in 2002, producing an apricot jam with a superior flavor, color and texture to all other versions. They since discovered that the Blenheim is an endangered tree, which combined with its popularity makes for extremely limited quantities and a waiting list. Sign up now to reserve jars ($20 for 16 ounces and $10 for eight ounces) that will be available in August.

Though we've only had the privilege of tasting these three products, they're enough for us to bet that We Love Jam's other offerings, including bread and butter pickles, Fukushu Kumquat marmalade and the intriguing hoshigaki (hand-dried, massaged persimmons), are worth ordering.

Jam of lords, lords of jam

The joys of Blenheim apricots

BY PAUL REIDINGER

Blenheim, as those of us who feel the occasional twitch upon the thread of Anglophilia will recall, is the ancestral home of the dukes of Marlborough as well as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, a figure much admired by, though not at all resembling, le George W. Bush. Blenheim is also a type of apricot, and Blenheim apricots were indeed grown on the grounds of Blenheim Palace in the 19th century; in due course the fruit, taking its way ever westward, arrived in California. You can occasionally find Blenheims at farmers markets; in addition, if you like or even love jam, they can be found in the jam produced by welovejam.com, a tiny San Francisco concern that until recently was making its entire production of apricot jam from the fruit of a single Blenheim tree in the Santa Clara valley.

The Blenheim, despite its grand pedigree, has recently fallen on parlous times.

Its fruit is smaller and slower to ripen than other varieties of apricot and, in my experience, can have a greenish tinge when bought fresh. ("Let them ripen for three or four days," I was told when I bought some last year. I did, and several rotted, which was rather irritating at $4 per pound.) These delicate qualities, while redolent of Old World charm and languor, do suggest that the fruit is at least as well-served being made into jam as harvested, shipped, and sold fresh in our mechanized agricultural economy. As with canned tomatoes, the right sort of processing — loving processing — can show Blenheims at their best.

The duo behind WLJ, Eric Haeberli and Phineas Hoang, don't use the word "love" lightly. Their entire enterprise (whose roots are traceable to some impromptu jam-making in 2002) is about passion, not money, from the saving of a particular type of apricot to the packaging of everything they make (including barbecue sauce and superlative biscotti) in containers that are either recyclable or, in the case of their cellophane sacks, compostable.

At the moment, WLJ looks a little the way Recchiuti Confections did a few years ago: it's a tiny and unlikely freckle on the face of the food business. But (as the young Alfie so gloomily observed in Annie Hall) the universe is expanding, and WLJ's products (available through the Web site) could soon be coming to Bi-Rite— and from there, who knows?

I almost fainted… ... the shipment I just received 20 minutes ago was *that* good. The jam was slightly warm from sitting in the UPS truck and I immediately put some on a piece of toasted bread... I think the warmth made the flavors even more intense. I tasted flowers and the most succulent fruit and honey. I am already sad thinking about the day that my supply will be gone. I was going to give away 2 of my 4 jars as gifts to my in laws, but... ummm... can I give away half my stash?! ;) Just wanted to thank you for putting such exquisite care and thought into your production of this truly wonderful jam. It truly comes through in the flavor and you have every right to assume the title of "best jam makers on the planet!"

Los Angeles, CA

Holy crap...your jam is friggin’ delicious. I just got my shipment today and quickly came home, toasted some bread, slathered it on, and smiled ear to ear. Great stuff. Thanks! What are my chances of ordering some more? Let me know your thoughts. You guys are great.

San Francisco, CA

Hi, the jam arrived today and it is beyond goodness.  I grew up next to a blenheim apricot tree outside my bedroom window and it's been 50 years since I've swooned over an apricot.  Thanks !

Chicago, IL

I sent my mother a jar of your pickles and she is addicted (she ate an entire jar in a week)...do you have any more available?

Oakland, CA

You're the best. I've only been able to try the BBQ sauce. But it is the best I have ever had in my life. EVER. Thank you for existing.

San Diego, CA

I have received my earlier order & your jam is ethereal! You guys are geniuses.

Tucson, AZ

Thank you very much for forever ruining me for ordinary store bought jam. I hope you're happy! Even the premium ones. Earlier this summer, I ordered elephant heart jam and it was the best, the very best jam I've ever tasted

Elk Grove, CA

I received your fleur de sel caramel sauce yesterday & had to open it immediately since it said it was insanely good. I didn't believe anything could be insanely good - but it was!! Part of me wishes I bought more than one jar & part of me knows if I did I would be eating the caramel straight out of the jar as fast as I could scarf it down! (Having only 1 jar will force me to pace myself - I hope!) It really IS insanely good! Thanks for another awesome product!

San Francisco, CA

The lemon rub is fantastic--I used it 2 ways: first as a composed butter to melt over some really bland tilapia filets and second as part of a warm "vinaigrette" (just rice vinegar, a bit of Dijon mustard, and your condiment) to toss with some shaved and sauteed (with some finely shredded white onion in olive oil) brussel sprouts.  Both garnered raves! Will try it next under the skin of chicken.........

Littleton, CO

The biscotti were/are amazing. My wife thinks these are the best things to come along since the wheel. Every product we have purchased have been simply amazing. Keep up the great work!!

San Mateo, CA

We received the [Swiss Holiday] cookies today and I must tell you there is something wrong with them -- they are sooo good we can't stop eating them. Seriously, when you are able to produce these commercially, PLEASE let us know.

Los Angeles, CA

We had some 'important' people over yesterday for a meeting about a script we have been trying to sell and decided to lay out some breakfast snacks with home-made scones and your apricot jam. They went nuts over it and your jam was a real ice breaker. I don't know whether selling it was due to our writing ability or your jam, but thanks guys!

Washington, DC

I was standing in my kitchen the other night, in the dark, looking out the window, mindlessly spooning Apricot Jam onto crackers and eating them, when I suddenly grew fearful I would run out or worse yet, you would run out before the next season crops come, so I immediately ran in and submitted my order for some more.

San Francisco, CA

PLZZ let me know when the bread and butter pickles are available again. My 80 year old grandmother basically went into cardiac arrest after she had them. I wanted to be sure and order her a few jars this season.

Los Gatos, CA

Last night I used just a tablespoon of jam on a brie slice of  the remaining little bit left in my last jar of my treasured jam.  I had to carefully estimate how much I would need with my granola and yogurt in the morning.

Help..  do you know of a We love Jam message board so I could beg, borrow or steal (yes, I would steal) just one more jar.

New York, NY

Unbelievable! That is all I can say. You guys hands down make the best jam in the universe. And your bbq sauce! My husband (who is the most picky eater) has been eating it with dinner every night for the past two weeks. Time to order some more or I will never heard the end of it.

San Francisco, CA

I have to admit I'm addicted to your BBQ sauce!  I literally put it on everything!

Pittsburg, PA

Thanks for the FANTASTIC marmalade.  I got to eat about 1 Tablespoon before the rest of my family devoured the rest of the jar.  I WANT MORE!!!!  Are you sure there are no lost jars hanging around??

San Ramon, CA

The kumquat marmalade is FABULOUS! I have taken to eating spoonfuls out of the jar and I am sad to say I will soon be running out! You have changed my mind about marmalade! I am looking forward to the apricot jam this summer!

Simi Valley, CA

I just had to tell you that we opened our first jar of your bread & butter pickles last week and they are absolutely delicious.  I've never had any that good, even the one's our neighbor used to make about 65 years ago.  I will definitely order them again.
Thanks so much for all your wonderful products.  Once again the jam was a big hit as Christmas gifts.

Matteson, IL

This was the first time I've had your apricot jam - love, love, love it!!  I also really like you're packaging.

Chapel Hill, NC

I received my order of apricot and mariposa plum jam yesterday - first of all, thanks for the fast shipping!  As I was waiting for the jam to arrive I began to wonder if it really could be THAT good - well, it is.  The apricot jam is unbelievable and unlike any jam I've ever tasted.  I am going to try my best to ration it out before moving on to the plum, but it will be tough.  I see many reorders in the future, and I can't wait to taste your other products.  Thanks again!

Bel Air, CA

I ordered both your blenheim apricot and mariposa plum jams and they are easily the most delicious food my tongue has ever had the pleasure to taste. My biggest problem is I don't know which is my favorite. They are both so heavenly. I love you guys!

Brooklyn, NY

Just wanted to say that we received our jam and it is DELICIOUS! Thanks so much.

Napa, CA

The b&b pickles are the absolute best (better than my Mom’s but I won’t tell her!).  I ate nearly half the jar in a single setting!  Now I must order more!!

Woodland Hills, CA

You guys rock, you even used corn starch packing materials! Thanks for the love that you guys put into your product!

White Plains, NY

I just wanted to say thanks for making the best apricot jam!  This is the first time I've ever bought it (I bought 4 jars and a jar of BBQ sauce) and it's absolutely incredible.  Please keep me on your list for future products and next year’s crop!

El Dorado Hills, CA

Our order arrived today, and the jam and the barbeque sauce are as wonderful as we could have imagined. And the pickles - when you decide to sell them, we will be ordering them by the case!  (Thank you for that thoughtful gift!) Please always keep us informed of any further and future offerings.  Top notch stuff - hands down the best apricot jam we have ever had!

Campbell, CA

It was only as I was scraping the last few molecules of the best marmalade I had ever eaten (as an ex-pat Brit I have sampled my share of marmalades) that I felt the overwhelming need to investigate the mysterious source of glass-encased ambrosia that some kind (but, anonymous) soul had sent me sans identification, lo those many months ago.

With ever-trusty Google to help me, I located We Love Jam, and marvel of marvels, a familiar name.  Very belated, but heart-felt thanks for your gift.

As scones and toast would seem quite naked without a We Love Jam embellishment, may we pick up from you the following items listed below?

Four (4) Blenheim apricot jam Two (2) BBQ sauce Two (2) Elephant Heart plums Eight (8) Fukushu kumquat.

Boynton Beach, FL

I can say that you guys, without question, make the best jam I have ever tasted in my life. THANK YOU!!!!

Boulder Creek, CA

Holy crap on a crutch!  Never before have I tasted anything like the remarkable product of your jam-making efforts; it is ethereal, apricot bliss in a jar, a beautiful gift of nature.  Certainly, nothing but the precious Blenheim and a creative kitchen like yours could yield such an amazing result.  Thank you for doing so much to preserve the legacy of the original Santa Clara Valley.

Dallas, TX

I have been meaning to email you ever since I received my jam to tell you how wonderful it is! Thank you so very much. Please know that there are two little jars of jam who now reside in Dallas, where they are much appreciated!

Oakland, CA

Just wanted to let you know we received your jams this week and they were fabulous. I'm telling all my friends and family about you guys! Yummy!

Dallas, TX

Got my jam last week and I am SO excited!  Thanks so much for all your hard work.  Haven't tried it yet - am waiting for a "special" moment.  Will share one with my Mom and Dad and one with my son and his wife (ok, maybe)!!!

Shoreline, WA

The jam is incredible! We received our shipment yesterday and we love your jam. I’m not a food writer, so I can’t go on and on about the taste and experience. Please don’t change it, ever. I will be ordering more for our use and as gifts.

Ashland, MA

I never liked apricot jam until today. Yours is intense and wonderful and worth the wait.
I want to keep dipping into it with a spoon!

Nantucket, MA

I came home yesterday and was delighted to find a box from "We Love Jam" waiting for me. The packaging is great and I just love the simplicity of your label. However, what is inside the jar is perhaps the best jam I have ever tasted. It's rich in color, intense with flavor and I am going to savor every spoonful. Thank you for all of the hard work that went into the process of creating what is essentially apricot "gold."

Kennesaw, GA

I received my original 4 jars and one is already gone!! It is wonderful.

Doylestown, PA

We received our 4 jars and we want to thank you for such an amazing jam!  We got all your updates on preparation and know it is a difficult and exhausting process so thank you so much! Thank goodness for Food & Wine or we would have never been able to enjoy your delicacy. We were both taught to share as children, BUT WE AREN’T SHARING OUR JAM! Already looking forward to our next order! Don’t stop making your jam, we’ll come help you at harvest ourselves if it gets too much, we love jam!

Basking Ridge, NJ

I love this jam!!! Can't stop eating it every morning! If you make more, please let me know. Thanks!

Plantation, FL

Well I just got the shipment and OH MY GOD...I wish I had ordered more.  The jam is simply one of the best things I have ever tasted and the bbq sauce...WOW WOW WOW. Kudos to you guys. I completely scrapped my dinner menu tonight so that I could have some of the jam and bbq sauce.  Keep up the good work and I look forward to some new products from you guys.  You have a dedicated customer in me...for good!

Culver City, CA

A friend and I brought your mind-blowing Mariposa jam to our favorite café yesterday, and we gave a taste to the café owner, whose wife also makes plum jam, and he was ecstatic. Then a bunch of other people in the café came up to ask for tastes, and everybody was raving about it. I just wanted to let you know that your Mariposa jam started a mini-riot. Can’t wait to try the kumquats!

Tujunga, CA

We had some jam on crepes this morning---heaven!  I could do without the crepes/toast/whatever and just eat it with a spoon.

San Rafael, CA

I received my jam today and the first thing I did was toast some of our wonderful bread and have it with your apricot jam - it was unbelievable - the best I have ever had....we ate about half of a jar already.

Danville, CA

First of all, I love the jam. Being a first time buyer, I was skeptical (something I bet you get all the time).

When growing up in a small track house in Hayward, every house on our block had an apricot tree in the back yard and a cherry plum tree in the front yard. My mother tells me it used to be PG&E property and an apricot orchard when they bought the house in 1950.  Being kids, we took it all for granted. Couldn't every kid climb the tree in their yard and grab a fresh apricot or plum?  Hardly anyone actually used the fruit. It was mostly left to rot, fall to the ground and make a big mess. That was the TV dinner age afterall. So most of the trees were removed one by one.

Your jam brought back all those memories of the supreme Blenheim. Congrats on accomplishing your mission.  I will never take a piece of perfect-tasting fruit for granted again.

San Francisco, CA

When it arrived, it took a few days for me to try it. One morning I nonchalantly asked my jam-loving boyfriend if he'd tried it yet. "It's good," came the reply.

So I was in no way prepared for the unsurpassably delicious, unconscionably good, irresistibly perfect taste sensation that hit my tongue when I finally tried it. I swear, I nearly fainted. It tasted like apricots, honey, and gold. It was so smooth, it glided over my tongue like a silk cloth over polished wood. I tossed manners to the wind and started eating it straight from the jar. Windham, NH

It took a couple weeks to get over to the old house and pick up the package, but I finally just had the pleasure of tasting the jam. And wow. It's been 15 minutes since I had some spread on an English muffin and my taste buds are still reeling. This stuff is amazing. I don't know what you guys did or who you signed a contract with to be able to produce such a ridiculously good jam, but thank you. I've only started on the first of two 16oz jars, and already I'm worrying about the day when it is going to run out. Speaking of which, is there any way to be on some kind of lifetime list to get the jam? This was totally worth the wait. And I'm glad I didn't know how good the jam was before, or else there would have been a breaking and entering charge on my record to get those sweet jars back to their rightful owner. Thank you for allowing me to taste the experience that is the Blenheim.
